Resumo

Mãe Água dam was built in 1962 to meet the demand of the Hydraulic Research Institute - IPH of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul - UFRGS, but with the occupation of the upstream area, without urban planning, many contaminants were incorporated sediments, causing several environmental liabilities. The integrated management of water resources requires a series of instruments and actors involved as well as an efficient base of hydrological, sedimentometric, hydrogeological and water quality data, thus providing technical support in decision making. This work evaluated Total Organic Carbon´s concentration in different layers, of the eight cores collected in the accessible areas of the dam, studying the correlation with the evolutionary process of degradation, caused by anthropogenic processes. For the study of geochronology (210Pb), multiple linear regressions of data from laboratory analyzes obtained in three cores. The results showed that the highest concentrations are closer to the water and sediment interface, this fact may be linked to the intensification of urbanization in the watershed and the anthropic actions adhering to the process, in addition to the high load of untreated effluents in the area. It?s concluded that corrective mitigation measures should be done, since urbanization has directly affected the use of the reservoir and, primarily, the local ecosystem.
