Resumo

The spatial-temporal analysis of surface suspended sediments concentration (SSSC) in rivers has been carried out with remote sensing data in support of in situ data. This study shows examples of how SSSC mapping can be used to assist hydrology and ecology studies in the central Amazon. Hydraulic and hydrodynamic processes that occur in floodplain lakes in the central Amazon, such as the backwater effect and the resuspension of sediments, were evaluated from the spatial-temporal mapping of sediment. Richness and distribution of birds in the Negro River was also assessed with this mapping. There are more species typical of white-water rivers where the SSSC is higher. SSSC estimated by remote sensing data can also be used to evaluate the results of hydrosedimentological simulations, assess anthropic actions that affect SSSC in rivers and understand the responses of hydrological systems to climate change. Despite the challenges related to the estimation of CSSS in rivers and lakes, the use of remote sensing data has been increasingly important for hydrological and ecological studies.
