Resumo

Wind energy, although it does not emit greenhouse gases and is considered clean and renewable, has negative impacts on a local scale, both socially and environmentally. It is noticed that the new land uses, resulting from the installation of wind towers, significantly alter the coastal areas and the interior of Northeast Brazil, this is mainly due to the alteration of the vegetation cover in the area of the towers and the construction of access. Thus, the objective of this research was to analyze the changes in land use and occupation of agricultural areas after the implementation of wind farms. We used primary and secondary data collection, analysis of satellite images, with methodological support for remote sensing, GIS and spatial analysis techniques. The study area was the municipality of Serra do Mel, which is located in the western region of the state of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. The results obtained were processed in the geographic information system QGIS and demonstrated through thematic maps and graphs. It was possible to conclude that the installation of wind farms caused few changes in the classes of use and occupation of the land, however, in periods of greater construction there was an increase in the exposure of the soil and a simultaneous reduction of the agricultural area.
