Resumo

Sediment transport in water stream is directly related to the silting of rivers and reservoirs and has caused various environmental and economic damages. One can mention the decrease in the useful life of the reservoirs and the deterioration ofthe surfaces of the hydraulic structures as a consequence of the water flow with sediments, making indispensable the sedimentological studies in hydraulic works projects. Thus direct measurements of the sediment loading are of extreme importance for preliminary studies and also for a correct evaluation of the impact caused by this process. Considering that obtaining hydrosedimentological data is not an easy task and that for the Jundiaí River, the object of this study, there is no history of sampling, the use of indirect methods through turbidimeters is a practical and economical alternative to obtain this information. This work presents a correlation of the NTU turbidity with the concentration of suspended sediments of the Jundiaí River. Suspended sediments were obtained from the analysis of water samples collected directly in the Jundiaí River, PCJ basin, using conventional direct sampling techniques and NTU turbidity data obtained with a nephelometric turbidimeter . The results obtained in the correlationwere used in conjunction with the values of suspended sediments obtained in the direct sampling, to elaborate a model, based on the selection of theoretical equations existing in the bibliography, able to represent the sediment transport phenomenon in the Jundiaí River, in a quantitative way.
