Resumo

The aim of the present work was to comparea simplemodule(programed in the MGB-SEDmodel) and a robust model of sediment river routing(HEC-RAS 5.0.3) in order to identify if it would be possible to obtain similarresults from the application of both models using the same upstream boundary condition. For this, a comparison was made between the results obtained frombothmodels for a river reachthat is located between the sedimentometric stations Governador Valadares and Resplendor, located 100km between each otherintheDoce river, State of Minas Gerais, Brazil. The input data were the same for both models, as well as the upstream anddownstream boundary conditions. On the other hand, the channel cross section changes, which process is considered in HEC-RAS 5.0.3 wasnot considered in the MGB-SED. In both models, sediment transport is governing by sediment continuity equation (Exner equation). As for the flow routing, whereas for the model MGB-SED is considered the method of Muskingum-Cunge, for HEC-RAS 5.0.3 were considered the unsteady and quasi-unsteadymethods. Among the results obtained, it was observed that the relationship between the MGB-SED and the HEC-RAS 5.0.3 sediment module is related not only to formulations considered in one or the other but mainly to the variation of the coefficients used in the equations of both models, once that different models in terms of complexity resulted in very similar downstream sedimentometric curves.
